The genus Odontoglossum was first named in 1815 by Humbolt, Bonpland, and Knuth, using the greek word "odonto" (tooth) and "glossa" (tongue), a reference to the toothlike projection on the lips.

From base line to top petals, the orchid stands at approximately 18-25 inches tall. The blooms (10-15 buds) measure 5.6 inches in lenght.
