Native to the Island of the Philippines, the name Grammatophyllum is derived from the Greek words gramma, meaning "a mark or character" and phyllum, "a leaf". This orchid is related to the Cymbidium orchids alliance and found growing as an aerial on trees or rocks. The first plants of the genus to be introduced into Europe was in 1852 and their flowering caused considerable sensation among horticulturists of the era. Because of its unique marking with the hue of golden algae, and seldom seen in the market, the G. Scriptum is one of the most sought after Asian orchid in the world.
